As a child you learned when you are right. Nobody said it out loud. You knew it anyway.
Children read long before they understand words. They read faces. They read the air in the room. A child understands your sentence late. Your state it understands at once. It notices whether you are in your body or just standing next to it, whether you soften or turn away. From that it draws a calculation: this is how I am welcome.
That calculation is a condition. It is rarely said and almost always learned. And it is precise. Children do not work with averages. They remember the one situation in which the air tipped, and they arrange themselves around it.
What the condition sounds like
For some it was: be good. For many it was: make sure I am okay.
Some conditions even sounded friendly. Be grateful. Do not make it harder for us.
A child who senses that its mother is at the end of her strength starts to spare her. It makes itself small so that she can be big. Or it makes itself big so that she does not have to be. From the outside, both look like an easy child. From the inside, it is work.
Then this child grows up, and the condition grows with it. It moves out of the nursery and into the job. It just has a different name now. It is called ambition. Or reliability.
The scene on a Thursday evening
Picture a Thursday evening. It is 10.40 pm, a woman is still sitting at the dining table answering emails that could wait until Monday. She is tired. She does not stop anyway.
Ask her why, and she tells you about her job. About the expectations, the industry, the pace.
Look twelve years back, at her first job. She was already doing it this way. Look further back, at school. She was the one who always handed everything in. And even further back, a girl sits at the kitchen table and notices: when I bring something, the house goes quiet.
The company did not set up this evening for her. The company only pays for it. It was set up thirty years ago, in a room where this behaviour helped.
This is where I always get stuck with conditioning. It was once a clever solution. That is why it holds so well.
Judgement is a human invention
Every condition is a judgement. This way you are good, this way less so. Nobody who wanted to harm you invented it. It was passed on by people who received it themselves, by parents who worked with what they had.
Judgement is a human invention. About you it says nothing. About the moment it came into being it says everything.
And the material it is made of, you can look at. That is the part almost nobody does. We carry sentences like these around for decades and mistake them for character. A judgement about you that is forty years old does not stand up well to examination. It has just never had one.
Your exhaustion travels on
Now it gets uncomfortable. I am saying it anyway, because this is where the core lies.
What runs on permanent mode in you, your children pass on. Your sentences are the smaller part. Your basic feeling is what arrives. A child regulates itself on you, even if you have resolved to do it differently from your parents. Resolutions work with words. Conditioning works with states.
If this sentence is turning against you right now, stop exactly there. Guilt helps nobody here. Responsibility does.
Guilt looks back and searches for someone. Responsibility looks at what you pass on, before you pass it on. That is the work. Hardly anyone calls it parenting. It changes the most.
What you can do with this week
Take one sentence you say about yourself as if it were your character. I am just one of those who. You know yours.
Then ask: how old is this sentence? Whom did it serve when it came into being?
Usually an answer comes, and usually it is older than you thought. You do not have to resolve it. It is enough that you know your sentence has a date. A sentence with a date loses its power over your today.
Everything has a cause. So does the condition under which you started out. A cause you can look at without blaming anyone, not your parents and not yourself.
When you have found your sentence, write to me. I read every message myself.
